Rise of Meeting, September 25, 2016

Friend Deanna LaMotte reminded the Meeting of an ecumenical training seminar on domestic violence, to be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016, in Asheville.  Coordinated by the FaithTrust Institute, it is entitled “Safe and Healthy Churches 2016 Training,” and will be held at the MAHEC Campus, 121 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC.  Registration is required.  At least two representatives of our Meeting plan to attend.  For more details, you can go to the Institute’s website.

Friend Joe Holbert announced his, and fellow Black Mountain residents’, concern about an application by a funeral home to add a crematorium facility.  There is a meeting of the Town’s Board of Aldermen on October 10 to vote on the zoning variance required for the facility to be built on State Street, adjacent to many shops and a couple of blocks from the Friends’ Meetinghouse.  Joe cited studies that indicate the possibility of toxic emissions from the facility; however, not all studies agree.   Contact Joe about signing a petition. Follow this link for more data about the possible impact.

Friend Susan Murty reminded Friends of the upcoming Sunday Forum events.  Next Sunday a Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business will be held soon after customary morning worship.  On October 9, the Adult Forum will address outreach and assistance efforts in the Hispanic community.  On October 16, the new director of the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry will present a summary of the many efforts made by the Ministry to assist those in need.
